Marija Karbić defended her doctoral thesis at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, in 2005. She has been working at the Croatian Institute of History since 1997. From 2014 she is the president of the Scholarly Council of the Institute and from 2017 is a member of its Managing Board. From 1995 till 2006, she was an external research associate on the projects of the Department of Historical Research of the Institute of Historical and Social Sciences of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Besides in several research projects financed by the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports of RC and the Croatian Science Foundation, she participated in a number of research projects financed from other sources, some of them international. Except in these research projects, she participated in the project International Medieval Bibliography (Institute for Medieval Studies, University of Leeds).

Since 2005, she participated in teaching at the University of Zagreb and the Catholic University of Croatia. She is an external collaborator of the Institute of Lexicography Miroslav Krleža in Zagreb and a member of the Editorial Boards of several scholarly journals. She is a member of several professional associations, such as the Croatian National Committee of Historical Sciences and Medieval Central Europe Research Network (MECERN).
