Kathie Bailey directs the Board on International Scientific Organizations (BISO) at the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM).  BISO coordinates the U.S. membership in the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), the International Science Council, and 17 ISC-affiliated international scientific organizations.  BISO also manages the NASEM’s International Visitors Office (IVO) which provides visa advice and assistance to international scientists and students in the sciences. Besides providing overall leadership and direction for the unit, Ms. Bailey works directly with the U.S. Committee for IIASA, the U.S. National Committees for astronomy, math, optics, SCOSTEP, and the Pacific Science Association.  She was an appointed member of the Department of State’s U.S. National Commission for UNESCO, and its committee for the International Hydrological Programme and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. Prior to coming to the NASEM, Ms. Bailey worked for the Association of American Universities and for the U.S. House of Representatives.  Ms. Bailey has a BA from Milligan College and a J.D. from Tulane University.
