Gihan Kamel is the SESAME (Synchrotron light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East) Infrared Beamline Scientist, on leave from the Faculty of Science, Helwan University, Cairo, Egypt, where she is a lecturer in Biophysics. Dr. Kamel obtained her Ph.D. degree in Physics in 2011 from the University of Rome, La Sapienza, Rome, Italy, and later on she was appointed a beamline researcher at the Infrared Beamline at Dafne light in Frascati during the period 2014-2015. Since 2015, she decided to return to the Middle East to take up the position of the Infrared Beamline Scientist at SESAME. Up to date, she is the only woman scientist at the facility. She is responsible of the Infrared beamline operation and development, and assists the beamline users to run their experiments. She is strongly motivated to raise the awareness about how the scientific developments could be successfully linked to industry and society. Dr. Kamel is particularly noted for her lectures on science for peace and science diplomacy, as well as, on women in science.
