Samuel Chng is an applied social psychologist and behavioural scientist with a research interest in developing evidence-based sociocognitive frameworks to explain behavioural phenomenons and develop behaviour change policies and interventions. He uses a mixed-methods approach in his applied work and frequently works with multidisciplinary team with colleagues from anthropology, public policy, urban design, economics, system engineering and computer science.
Currently, he is a Research Fellow in the Chen Tianqiao Programme on Urban Innovation at the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities where he looks at the acceptance and adoption of technological innovations in smart cities. He is also collaborating in Cooling Singapore where he studies the perception of outdoor thermal comfort and and support for urban heat island mitigation.
Samuel’s research focuses on:
- modelling modifiable processes and mechanism that regulate behavior patterns,
- developing evidence-based interventions to (i) disrupt existing behavior patterns and (ii) establish new ones,
- developing materials and plans to allow for sustainable implementation of such interventions.
His research is applied in following areas:
- Organisation studies (Adoption of technology in the workplace)
- Transportation (Travel mode choice; Adoption of Autonomous Vehicles and Mobility-as-as-Service)
- Environmental decision-making (Cooling behaviour)
